Education systems in New Zealand and China

Do you know anything about the differences between the Chinese & Kiwi education systems? Educations in New Zealand and China are totally different. Students in China are much more stressful than ones in New Zealand. Both systems include kindergarten, primary, secondary and tertiary education.

The main difference of education in these two countries is the materials used for teaching and learning. In China teachers require students to learn from text books, all level students have to buy text books and related work books. There are two text books each year for a subject - semester 1 & 2 per year. While in New Zealand, no text books at all for students, even for high school students, they don’t need to buy any books, unless they want to buy.

The second different point of education is the expectation for student future. In China many teachers and parents want their students/children to enter into famous universities and brilliant careers. Students seldom have their own choices for their studies and careers. They can apply to a number of universities but they are only accepted if they pass their exams, so it’s very competitive to enter a famous university. Whereas in New Zealand, students have lots of freedom to select their subjects, universities and careers, but their choices are dependent upon their exam results.  They can apply several universities, and enrol in one of them if their exam results are acceptable by the university, Teachers and parents only give them suggestions. It’s up to students themselves who make decisions.

The third difference of education is the method of teaching. In China students should understand and remember all the key points of text books, they learn knowledge from books. While in New Zealand teachers encourage students find the truth and facts themselves. Students can ask questions and solve them independently.

The final difference of education is the exams. In China there are lots of tests and exams in schools, even in primary schools, students are ranked by their exam results. In New Zealand, most public primary and middle schools have much fewer tests and exams than in China, only high schools have tests and exams for students, but it isn’t as nearly stressful as it is in China.

That’s why more and more students come to New Zealand for their high school or university studies. Both systems have advantages and disadvantages, because of different culture.

A trip to New Zealand Zoo with my Daughter

In last school holiday, I took my daughter Regena who is almost 6 years old to Western Springs Park where includes Auckland Zoo and spring-fed lake. She was so excited that she asked me to go there again. It was a very impressive experience, you can share the enjoyment with other families and children could learn a lot by watching different animals, their living styles, their feeding and reproduction ways.

It was April 30, the only day that didn’t rain in two week time. There was very good sunshine, in the afternoon, I decided to take her to the Zoo to visit the lovely animals there. Regena was very happy to go with me. When we got there, there were a lot of people there, most of them were families with their children. The parking place is quite full, I couldn’t find a parking place for my car, I drove around, finally, I parked my car in Western Spring College which was near the Zoo. Regena was very excited when we were on the way to the Zoo.

We bought the tickets and went into the Zoo. There were no cheap family tickets, but we could stay in it for the whole day. Regena got a Zoo map, so we followed the map, went to every animals’ area to watch them. We found Kiwi birds, tigers, giraffes, zebras, horses,  elephants, etc. Many children were shouting when they saw animals moving or reacting. When we went to a children play ground, she couldn’t wait to join children there. There were a lot of parents watching their children playing, I joined them as well. Regena enjoyed it so much that I couldn’t stop her. At the end she got tired and hungry, we left the play ground for a snack.

When we went out of the Zoo, the spring-fed lake was in front of us. Regena had her energy back again, she ran through the bank, watched the lovely ducks. We didn’t bring any food to feed the ducks. A girl gave us two slices of bread, Regena was very glad to feed the ducks. When we finished and started to go home, she asked me when was the next time we come again with a bunch of bread. I said it depends, she was a little bit sad, then I told her that we will visit the Zoo and duck lake again when we get time, she was happy again.

As far as I can say, it’s a good activity for children with their families, so the family members can be more closer to each other, and understand ecosystem better.

Which two blogs will I write?

First of all I would like to write a blog about "Things to do for families". Because I enjoy doing activities with my kids and they can learn something from activities.

Secondly, I may write a blog about "A Description of a System". Because I know both China and New Zealand school education system very well, so I will compare the two systems and find the differencies and similarities. There are more and more students who come from China, they want to study here in New Zealand for their secondary or tertiary education. Due to different education systems and cultures, students from China might have a lot of challenges here.
